MemberIf you have spent any time dropping into the Automaton sector, you already know the distinct panic of seeing a wall of Scout Striders marching your way. On paper, they look like fragile bipedal walkers. In practice, when you are getting pinned down by heavy fire and a squad of these armored units rushes your position, their front shields feel completely impenetrable.
The textbook way to deal with a Scout Strider is to flank it. If you can get behind them, the pilot is completely exposed, and a couple of quick shots from basically any primary weapon will drop them instantly. But let’s be real: when you are facing a massive bot horde, you rarely have the luxury of pulling off a clean flank. You need to drop them fast, and you need to do it from the front. Here is exactly how to do that without wasting full magazines or dying in the process.
Top Frontal Weak Spots
If you are stuck facing a walker head-on, do not just mindlessly spray bullets at the main front shield. Your ammo will just bounce off, and you will get punished for it. Instead, focus your precision fire on these two critical front-facing vulnerabilities:The Hip and Leg Joints: Look closely at the axle right beneath the main pelvis area that connects the legs to the upper cockpit body. This specific joint has lower medium armor. If you are packing a weapon with decent armor penetration, hitting this “crotch” axle will literally snap the legs or force the bot pilot to dismount in just two to three shots.
The Visor Slit: This requires a steady hand and a precision weapon, but it is highly effective. There is a tiny viewing window directly on the front faceplate. If your aim is true, you can land a headshot right through that slit and take out the trooper sitting inside without needing to break the vehicle itself.
Best Loadout Counters
If you bring the right tools into the mission, Scout Striders stop being a threat and turn into easy targets, regardless of which angle they are facing you from.Explosive Primary Weapons: This is the ultimate lazy-but-effective counter. Weapons like the PLAS-1 Scorcher, SG-8P Plasma Punisher, and R-36 Eruptor completely bypass the front armor plate. Because they deal explosive Area of Effect (AoE) damage, you can shoot them directly in the faceplate or even skip a shot off the ground right between their legs. The explosive splash reaches right around the shield and instantly kills the exposed pilot on the back.
Medium Armor Penetrating Primaries: If you prefer standard ballistic options, guns like the JAR-5 Dominator or the BR-14 Adjudicator are your best bets. They have enough punch to shred the hip joints directly from the front, collapsing the walker under its own weight.
Support Weapons: If you want them gone instantly, call in the heavy hardware. The AC-8 Autocannon, Anti-Materiel Rifle (AMR), and Grenade Launcher clean up walkers effortlessly. A single well-placed AMR shot or Autocannon round targeted directly at the hip joint will blow the entire unit apart in a split second.
Impact Grenades: When a cluster of them groups up, don’t overthink it. Toss a G-16 Impact Grenade directly at the walker’s face or legs. It detonates immediately on contact, wiping out single striders or tight clusters before they even have a chance to disperse.
Community Tip: If you are struggling with how these hitboxes behave in real-time combat, checking out community breakdowns like the “Best Ways to Kill a Scout Strider” guide on YouTube by Andrea FPS Games can give you an excellent visual reference.
Advanced Strategy: Reinforced Scout Striders
Just when you think you have them figured out, Helldivers 2 throws a wrench in the gears. Once you step up to higher difficulties (Difficulty 7 and above), standard walkers start getting replaced by Reinforced Scout Striders. These variants feature a fully enclosed, heavily armored cockpit, meaning you can no longer splash the pilot from behind or snipe them through a visor slit. They also carry side-mounted rockets that will absolutely ruin your run if left unchecked. To take these heavy variants down quickly, you need to adjust your strategy:
Explode Their Rockets: The best defense is a good offense here. Aim specifically for the rocket racks mounted on the sides of the vehicle before they have a chance to fire them at you. If you manage to detonate one of their unfired rockets, the resulting explosion will heavily damage or completely destroy the heavy strider outright.
The Heavy Hip Check: If they have already fired off their rockets, do not panic. Fall back on the classic tactic: focus your heavy medium-penetrating fire strictly on the lower pelvis or the leg joints to compromise the structural integrity and bring the heavy chassis down.
